8. I driver sonori

Notare che sono stati riscritti molta parte del nucleo audio e relativi driver. Il materiale vecchio è generalmente chiamato `OSS' e il nuovo è chiamato `ALSA'. L'intenzione è di abbandonare l'OSS. Per evitare conflitti di nome, il materiale ALSA generalmente ha `snd-' come prefisso a tutti i parametri di avvio.

Notare che ogni driver ha il proprio argomento individuale di avvio condiviso (kernel molto vecchi usavano sound=). Inoltre, generalmente nessun default era impostato al momento della compilazione (es. occorre fornire un argomento di avvio per far rilevare vecchie schede ISA non-PNP.) La miglior fonte di informazioni per la propria scheda sono i file in linux/Documentation/sound/.
